An Honest Attempt at Speaking the Absence

Image
The Abridged History of Rainfall by Jay Hopler My rating: 4 of 5 stars Jay Hopler’s “The Abridged History of Rainfall” is a collection of good poetry: many fine lines and phrases, imagery that is true and right. Many of the poems have a clear voice that is one we want to listen to. Others play with archaic voices or the stylized voice of Wallace Stevens. Sometimes the poet seems to undermine his own poetic eloquence: “A squadron of dragonflies is darning the darkening/yard” is a fine line, but the poet then says: “Correction: a squadron of dragonflies is darning the air above the darkening/Yard” —- not as strong an image or conceit. Given that these are poems mourning the loss of his father, some seem a bit precious and others a bit cold. Hopler is at his most eloquent in simplicity, as in lEpitaph”: I cannot tell you How many years I have done This. Last year when I did this, My father was alive.l Still and all, I recommend the collection. It is honest more than eff...

A Necessary but not enjoyable read

Image
Housefire Elegies by Keith Montesano My rating: 3 of 5 stars “…[W]e’ll never owe a thing to this nightlong world,” writes Keith Montesano, which might serve as the epitaph for this book as well as life. I did not want to like “Housefire Elegies.” The unrelenting horror of violent death. The nearly random juxtaposition and blending of mixed analogies and metaphors. But perhaps that was Montesano’s point–if there is nothing but violent meaninglessness, then the language should reflect it? For “God has nothing to do do with how tight you hold on” when the tsunami comes your way, or the plane crashes, or the criminal attacks, or the housefire burns. And you are lucky, perhaps you will “live out your days among us all, and escape before you ever know the meaning.” This is not an enjoyable read–and it is not intended as such. There are good poems, sometimes clubbed to death by overweening focus on the violence...

Flawed by worth reading

Image
Sixty Days and Counting by Kim Stanley Robinson My rating: 3 of 5 stars I wanted to like this concluding volume of Robinson’s trilogy more than I did–in fact, parts were very good. What holds me back and reduces my rating is primarily the naive politics, often expressed in unbelievable blog “chats” by the President of the US. The conspiracy suspense story is fun and exciting. The “domestic” drama of a father trying to do right by his young sons also good. The science in the science fiction is plausible and the effects of global climate change all-too likely. Then there is the unlikely resolution to all-things China that spoils much of the end of the book. I do like the weaving of Buddhism, science, and real politik. And the characters are complex and interesting. View all my reviews

A comprehensive guide through the incomprehensible mind of genius.

Image
Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson My rating: 5 of 5 stars A biography itten through the lens of Leonardo’s jounals, this work by Isaacson is a comprehensive journey through the comprehensive but incomprehensible mind of a genius. Organizing by topic as much as chronology, Isaacson helps us see how Leonardo sought to understand all things and reveal the intersections and connections within. View all my reviews

A Worthy effort

We Deserve the Gods We Ask For by Seth Brady Tucker My rating: 3 of 5 stars Seth Brady Tucker’s collection seems earnest. But for me the conceit of superheroes mixed with real or imagined characters doing dramatic monologues did not work well enough. Perhaps a bit more editing–and I don’t mean the occasional typos–would have strengthened what is a noteworthy effort at describing PTSD and the soldier’s experience, as well as giving voice to other speakers. The diction sometimes stretches too far and is in danger of trivializing heartfelt emotion. Nonetheless, “We Deserve” is worth reading at least once. View all my reviews

Mourning the loss of a great poet - Richard Wilbur 96

Mourning the loss of a great poet. Richard Wilbur wrote fine poetry and yet was often underestimated because it hearkened to traditional forms in a time of radical experimentation and self-exposure. http://wapo.st/2gIc8EW

A Tough but Worthwhile Read

Image
The Vietnam War: An Intimate History by Geoffrey C. Ward My rating: 5 of 5 stars A tough read—there were atrocities and heroes, sages and fools on all sides. If you have done any significant reading/research, you will not learn anything dramatically new here–but the stories and then overall perspective from this distance all make this a worthy read. For those to whom this is all new, a must read. We are who we are today in the US and in Vietnam because of this war–for better or ill. View all my reviews

A challenging but accessible welcome

Image
Welcome to the Universe: An Astrophysical Tour by Neil deGrasse Tyson My rating: 5 of 5 stars Given that I am a layperson and my calculus is far behind me, I still believe that I was conceptually able to grasp at least a quarter of the matter in the book, the rest remaining “dark matter” for me, existent, imaginable but not yet graspable. The authors do a great job of explication, but this still means that thus is a challenging book. I do feel that my understanding of the process behind E=mc2 for instance rose to a higher level as a result of spending quality time with these 3 intelligent and witty men. View all my reviews

A Disappointing Collection by a Good Writer

Image
Winter's Journey by Stephen Dobyns My rating: 2 of 5 stars If poetry is the careful distillation of language to an essence,, then these stream-of-consciousness prosy essays are not really poetry. There is no doubt Stephen Dobyn's can write---given his past poetry collections and the concluding poem in Winter's Journey. But I cannot recommend this collection, given that it feels lax and self indulgent. There are moments: phrases and sentences that ring true or have fine wit about them. Let's just let it go at this: Disappointing. View all my reviews

Image
Afterland by Mai Der Vang My rating: 5 of 5 stars Mai Der Vang’s “Afterland” manages to make surrealistic and visionary poetry accessible. She writes from biography and family history but speaks the universal. Images collide and morph into each other and language and syntax warp away and back into common tongue. I particularly liked: – Another Heaven – Original Bones – After All Have Gone – Gray Vestige – This Heft upon Your Leaving – Three Sometimes a poem stretches too far and fails from the surrealism and the warped syntax. But the collection as a whole is a fine one. View all my reviews

Can poetry save reading?

"You can’t zoom through poetry; it forces you to slow down, think, concentrate, relish words and phrases," writes Phillip Yancey in the Washington Post . "Nevertheless, neuroscience proves what each of these busy people have found: it actually takes less energy to focus intently than to zip from task to task. After an hour of contemplation, or deep reading, a person ends up less tired and less neurochemically depleted, thus more able to tackle mental challenges."

From Merwin

Everything that does not need you is real W. S. Merwin

This is how I write

“A sight, an emotion, creates this wave in the mind, long before it makes words to fit it.” Virginia Woolf “Beneath memory and experience, beneath imagination and invention, beneath words, there are rhythms to which memory and imagination and words all move; the writer’s job is to go down deep enough to feel that rhythm and let it move memory and imagination to find the words.” Ursula LeGuin

Fatherhood

My Dad kept a copy of my poem " Fatherhood ," which I wrote for him, under the cash register in his store until the day he died. I miss him every day.

Happy Father's Day

When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. - Mark Twain

The candle and the mirror

There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. —Edith Wharton

Invitation to a poetry reading near Boston

I would like to invite you to a poetry reading I am participating in that benefits Pieta House, an Irish suicide prevention service, on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 1 pm at the Arts for the Armory in Somerville, Massachusetts.  Nine poets (including me) will be reading from an anthology, Luminous Echoes, put together by poet Heath Brougher with the assistance of Into the Void, an Irish literary journal edited by Philip Elliot, for the benefit of Pieta House. Details below. IMPORTANT: PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON ATTENDING so that the organizers can get a sense of how many chairs to put out etc. I know some of you are too far away to come or have other plans, but if you can’t make it and you’d like a copy of the anthology, you can order it for 8.5 euros (approximately 10 dollars US) using this link: http://intothevoidmagazine.bigcartel.com. The cost of shipping, which is included, is the only part of that fee that does not benefit Pieta House. You can also make a donation ...

The Hatred of Poetry by Ben Lerner My rating: 4 of 5 stars This is not a book for someone who does not read poetry, believes s/he does not “get” poetry, or otherwise wants an introduction to help them fill the need to get a better great in Lit class. This is a thoughtful and passionate critical essay that ranges over centuries of conundrum: Why have so many for millennia spoken of their hate for poetry? Along the way, Lerner provides brief and cogent explications of some poems. He clearly is careful and loving reader of poems. I Loved it when he said that Keats’ poems failed to send him into trances or transports. And I agree that Dickinson’s discords sing to me more than Keats’s chords. Ben Lerner loves poetry so much that he hates it. His explanation is a very Platonic one, that there is a sphere of ideal poems and that all earthbound ones are pale shadows. The gap between drives us to desire more from the individual poem we read than it can deliver and ...

Commencement Address - May 5, 2017

Members of the Germanna Community College Board, Honored Guests, Faculty, Staff, Friends and most especially graduates, thank you for giving me this opportunity to say a few words of parting at this my last Commencement as President, my Last Sermon, my Last Lecture. About a decade ago after I had taken on this trust, I began my speech at my Inauguration by saying: This day celebrates the opportunities provided by America’s promise. It celebrates those who came before. It celebrates the mission and achievements of those who have served, those who currently serve, and those who will serve Germanna Community College and its communities and students. Tonight, I use this opportunity once again to recognize and to thank others as well as to recognize and thank you, the graduates, for the privilege of having served you and others like you. Tonight is no different. While I stand here alone to speak to you, I have never been alone in the role I have performed. Now, I am mindful of the fact that...

Unity

“When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world. John Muir

From "The Knapsack Notebook" by Matsuo Basho, Stephen Addiss, Sam Hamill

“Nothing’s worth noting that is not seen with fresh eyes.” WITHIN THIS TEMPORAL BODY composed of a hundred bones and nine holes there resides a spirit which, for lack of an adequate name, I think of as windblown. Like delicate drapery, it may be torn away and blown off by the least breeze. It brought me to writing poetry many years ago, initially for its own gratification, but eventually as a way of life. True, frustration and rejection were almost enough to bring this spirit to silence, and sometimes pride brought it to the brink of vanity. From the writing of the very first line, it has found no contentment as it was torn by one doubt after another. This windblown spirit considered the security of court life at one point; at another, it considered risking a display of its ignorance by becoming a scholar. But its passion for poetry would not permit either. Since it knows no other way than the way of poetry, it has clung to it tenaciously.

Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home. Basho

The moon and sun are eternal travelers. Even the years wander on. A lifetime adrift in a boat or in old age leading a tired horse into the years, every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home. Basho
